04 May 2021

There’s no denying that the act of reading is a romantic one. Nothing quite fulfills the fantasy as a physical book, paper cuts and all. Drop your Kindles and Kobos, take out your credit card, call a Gojek – this week, we’re heading to Singapore’s best bookstores!

Basheer Graphic Books

Where: Bras Basah Complex

Basheer Graphics caters to the visually-driven. Expect titles and magazines related to architecture, design, animation, art and craft, typography, photography – and everything else that will please the eyes. Not an artist? That’s okay! You can still get interesting coffee table books here.

City Book Room

Where: 420 North Bridge Road

This indie publisher and bookshop is a beam of light in an otherwise grey, nondescript in Bugis. An obvious labor of love from owner Tan Waln Ching, the space sells mostly Chinese books that are “foods for the human mind”, with a small collection of curated titles in English, and other languages from the Nusantara.

Kinokuniya
Where: Ngee Ann City, Bugis Junction, Jem

One of the biggest and oldest surviving bookstores in Singapore, Kinokuniya – or more affectionately known to readers as Kino – has everything from classic literature to Japanese anime merch. Too lazy to browse in person? Kino also has an online webstore for your convenience.
